DAY EXCURSIONS

THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY

Shortly after leaving Nairobi you come to the edge of the Great Rift Valley. A spectacular view opens up with the land dropping dramatically from conifer forests to dry and dusty plains way below. Distinctive shapes of extinct volcanoes rise from the floor of the Rift Valley and in the distance is the glint of lake water. You drive down into the Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park where lunch is served at your lodge. The park is best known for its flocks of pink flamingoes, sometimes numbering over a million. The park is rich in other bird life and home to many animals including a proliferation of water buck and warthogs. This park is also a rhino sanctuary. You return to Nairobi at approximately 18.30 hours.

LAKE NAKURU

LAKE NAIVASHA

Located about 100 km from Nairobi the lake is a recreation centre for the Nairobi City dwellers. Activities include boating, water sports and fishing. The lakeside is used for growing high quality flowers and other horticultural products for the export market. This lake is a bird watchers paradise as over 300 species have been sighted. The bird life is more generous from October to March but the African fish Eagle, whose hunting skills remain as an attraction for the lake visitors, takes pride of place. A visit to the nearby Hell's Gate National Park where dramatic rock formations provide spectacular scenery on which to photograph animals such as the giraffe, zebra, gazelle, and water-buck, is recommended. For the rock climbers, the rock formations provide a formidable challenge.

LAKE BARINGO

Lying in the Great Rift Valley, with a semi arid climate, this place is a haven of peace in harsh and rugged but scenic surroundings. Hippos and crocodiles are plentiful. Crocodile is considered harmless by the local people who fish standing in the water whilst the crocodiles on the same mission swim by! This area has abundant bird life with over 400 spices having been reported. Bird watching can be done on foot or by boat. Other leisure activities are water sports, fishing, visiting the local people’s village. This place is reputed to have one of the most beautiful views in Africa.

Lake Baringo Club:

Built under the palm trees, its green lawns and the clashing pink, purple, red and orange bougainvillaea the place is a beauty in the middle of the hot, steamy climate. Boat rides, nature walks and traditional dances are some of the activities here while hippos are frequent visitors on your doorsteps at night.

Island Camp Baringo:

Island Camp is situated on an enchanting, remote island in Lake Baringo. Access to Island Camp is only by boat, driven by experienced boatmen.
